Federal Public Services (FPS)

Chancellery of the Prime Minister FPS

The Chancellery of the Prime Minister FPS supports the Prime Minister in guiding and coordinating government policy. This FPS provides the Prime Minister with support in areas such as content and administration, as well as aspects of legal, logistical and communication-related matters. This FPS also acts as a point of contact with various federated entities on the one hand and the European Union on the other.

FPS Policy and Support

The FPS Policy and Support assists the government and supports the federal organisations in various areas: IT, HR, organisational control and compliance, budget, accounting and public procurement. The FPS Policy and Support was created on 1 March 2017 and is the result of the integration of the services of the FPS Personnel and Organisation (including Selor, the OFO, FED+ and PersoPoint), the FPS Budget and Management Control (nl - fr), Fedict and Empreva into a single entity.

Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation FPS

The mission assigned to the Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation FPS is to handle Belgium’s foreign relations. The Foreign Affairs network encompasses some 130 embassies, consulates and representations in foreign countries as well as in Belgium. These bodies are run from the central government in Brussels.

Home Affairs FPS

The aim of the Home Affairs FPS is to prepare and implement the policies of the Federal Home Affairs Minister in the following areas: police and civil security, crisis management, policy regarding non-Belgian nationals, the registration and identification of natural persons and the management of institutional and regulatory issues, as well as the exercise of democratic rights.

Finance FPS

The Finance FPS collects and manages some 70 billion EUR in taxation every year. This amount covers the majority of public spending. The Finance FPS aspires to the greatest possible fiscal equality.
This public service also responds to a series of collective needs. For example, it carries out audits on products and makes sure that property transactions are conducted in a legally sound manner.

The Employment, Labour and Social Dialogue FPS ensures there is a balance between employees and employers in their working relationship. It handles all aspects of safety, the promotion of wellbeing and diversity in the workplace.

Social Security FPS

The Social Security FPS sits at the crossroads of all legislation that contributes to the social protection of citizens. This FPS acts to make sure that each individual is able to benefit properly from his or her social rights and aims to ensure the viability of a system of support and solidarity that is as efficient as it is fair.

Health, Food Chain Safety and Environment FPS

The Health, Food Chain Safety and Environment FPS is responsible for preparing and implementing strategy for public health (funding care establishments, organising the healthcare professions, providing emergency medical assistance, consultation bodies). It also has the task of preparing and carrying out the strategy relating to food safety and the protection of public health and the environment (standardisation of products, checks on cosmetics and tobacco, sustainable production and consumption).

Justice FPS

The aim of its combined objectives to provide legal advice, support the judicial apparatus and carry out sentences is to contribute towards a more harmonious relationship between the person in the street and the justice system.

Economy, SMEs, Self-Employed and Energy FPS 

The task of the Economy, SMEs, Self-Employed and Energy FPS is to create the conditions required for the competitive, sustainable and balanced operation of the goods and services market in Belgium. To achieve this aim, the FPS plays an active and effective part in controlling the overall standards framework of the country’s economic and monetary union.

Ministry of Defence

The Ministry of Defence is responsible for defending the country. In addition to this, the MoD takes part in various military missions conducted by international organisations working for peace in the world.  Social Integration, Fight against Poverty and Social Economy PPS 

The Social Integration, Fight against Poverty and Social Economy PPS handles the implementation, assessment and monitoring of social integration policy. This involves close collaboration with other public service bodies (FPS or PPS), as well as cooperation and ongoing dialogue with all levels of politics and target groups.

Science Policy PPS 

The Science Policy department of the federal authorities is responsible for designing and implementing programmes and research networks, as well as managing Belgium’s participation in European and international organisations (European Space Agency, European Southern Observatory, European Synchrotron Radiation Facility, etc.) and supervising the ten federal scientific establishments.
