Belgium sends four F-16s to Libya

date: 22 March 2011

On Monday, 21 March 2011, Belgium deployed four F-16 fighters to the no-fly zone over Libya. In a no-fly zone, no aircraft may pass through the airspace without explicit permission from the controlling authorities. This decision was taken by the international coalition that is ensuring compliance with UN Resolution 1973.

Belgium is taking part in Operation Odyssey Dawn. 150 Belgian military personnel are involved and Belgium's aircraft are stationed at the Araxos airbase in Greece for this mission.
The objective of the operation is to enforce the UN decision to establish a no-fly zone over Libya. The international coalition will do this in three ways: air surveillance, interceptions and command and control.

The Belgian pilots may use force, in compliance with specific rules of engagement and with a view to protecting the civilian population.
